So many helmets... which one to pick?

Well at the end of this season I had a pretty rough crash and had a bad concussion. Lights were on but nobody was home. Woke up 6hrs later in the hospital.

So I've been looking at helmets and really don't know what to get. They range from 125-600. Now I know you can't put a price on safety but my price is 250-325 range. But looking at all these helmets what should I look for. Last one I had was a Troy Lee. And I liked it but the science in helmets has change a lot. So what are some good tips.

Was looking at this only cuz I like how it looks.

I like the bell Moto 9. They can be found on close out
for around $300 on eBay if you’re not too picky on color.

Look for the one year old SE4’s I’ve seen them in the $300.00 range

I wer nothing but Arai. Best fitting helmet and most comfortable I've ever worn.

But in that price range I would look at a bell moto 9 on closeout. Picked up one last year for my son, $299. They then lowered price another $110 and Rocky mountain put the $110 in my account.

I've been in Arai's for the last 10 years or so, have sworn by them, but when my daughter needed a real helmet I chose 6D, and so far I'm pretty impressed with those. I might be switching up for myself as well.

i like my fly.. they are in that price range and seem to always be improving their technology and updating their helmets. i dont have one of the latest models but the last one that i had, when i went face first into the ground and broke both wrists, smashed my helmet pretty bad..but not even a headache!!! im a believer after that. good wall piece now.

I've taken a hard hit with Fly F2 helmet also. The helmet was messed up but I was fine. I'm happy with it. I also have a Shoei, feels good, I like it also, but I haven't tried it out in a crash yet! Don't really feel like testing it out that way!

I think you should start by trying a bunch on and figure out which fits your head the best. Heads are all different shapes and styles, and so are helmets. Having said that, Fly's tend to fit my eggish shaped head the best.

If you are serious about protecting your melon........ why look at anything other than the 6D helmets??? They seem to have the most going for them in the concussion prevention department and if you got knocked silly last season, that would be the first place to look. I say this and I don't have one, but if I were buying a new helmet, that's about the only brand I would shop now based on the technology out there to help limit injuries.

I've lost track of how many concussions I've had while wearing high end helmets and have never cut corners due to price. Got to the point that I was considering giving up on riding after 40 some years as it was becoming easier and easier to lose consciousness when I hit my head. Instead, decided to ride well within my limits and buy a 6d helmet and so far I've managed to avoid any more concussions for the last few years. I bought a 6D helmet due to the various awards they've been given for their revolutionary helmet design. I agree with Robin, if you've had concussions and worried about getting another one, buy a 6D. Just google 6D helmets and you'll see the kind of recognition they've received. Such as this ...

I'd go with the open face leather helmet!!! They're definitely the most comfortable, and the vision u get is outstanding!!! Plus the chicks dig it!!!!

The new lower end tld has the same technology in it as their high end... food for though

Shoei only here. Haven't had a dinger in mine yet (knock on wood) but by far the most comfortable helmet on my mellon. I like the bell helmets but I always felt like my jaw was hanging out of the bottom of them.

If you want to be like DHDS01 buy an Airoh!

6D sure seems to be the ticket when you do the research, but I'm not sold on them. I've seen a lot of youth riders get concussions wearing 6D. Probably more than should have. We had good luck with Fly, not any sign of head injury and the helmet got banged up pretty good.

This is in youth, not sure if adult is the same situation

When I broke my collarbone my helmet was destroyed, fractured in two spots. And I had ZERO nuero problems from that crash. Not even a headache. Never realized this until I looked st the helmet closely about 6 months after my accident when I was healed up. Although the collarbone required a 5 hour surgery. She was pretty jacked.

I run the fly f2 carbons. I get them at James for about $160 closeout. Go to Kames man. They got a ton of closeout helmets for sick cheap !

I’m not so sure about the 6d either. I feel like they’re the same as neck braces. All the rave that they help. But how do we really know? ...seems like a ball peen hammer smashes your dome every time you hit the ground just right. (Don’t wanna turn this isn’t a 6d bash neck brace thread just sayin my theory which has no factual evidence or testing. They’re probably good helmets I’m just not sure about them) and mooch seems to have a great review on them especially with his concussion history. So they’re probably great helmets. I just don’t wanna drop $700+.

I’ve akways worn shoeis my entire life until I got these f2 carbons. And trey canard wore f2 carbons. If his brain is ok I’m confident it’s good enough for me.

What about helmets with the MIPS System? Isn’t this the equivalent of the 6d Technology?

Bell Flex (MIPS system), Leatt's newest helmets and 6D all have some technology that addresses rotational impact forces much like the 6D design. Be tween those who knows which one is the best but if you look into the design theory it makes sense. Oh and I run a Bell Flex due to a great deal I got on it. My son uses a 6d. Both of them have served us well so far. There may be some more companies using this technology by now but this is what i look for when buying helmets. Just mt $.02

why does it seem like the highest end road racing helmets are not using the same technology? Arai seems to own that market.

Because those helmets are designed for a high speed crash not a 15 mph tip over. 6d pretty much forced everyone to start making dirtbike helmets. Shoei and arai are just late to the party.
