COCR 9-17 and 9-18 Updates

If you haven't been for a while, I think you should check it out. The "New Management" is putting moneys made back into the track. They have a couple of new pieces of prep equipment, and are really trying to put forth the effort. Granted, I hadn't been there for probably three years, but the the track has changed (for the better IMO). And they have riders running the equipment now. They have been watering, chisel plowing, watering and then rotary tilling after that. It was primo last weekend after the rains on Saturday evening. The track is faster with less jumps. I think there was only one 65' gap, and most of the rest are table tops, but still very fun.

Practice Saturday and race on Sunday. Let me know if you need anymore info, and I'll do what I can to help.

Thanks,
Ron

What kind of practice and race turnout do they get? What is the deal with 50cc bikes, big track or their own?

Any helmet cam footage?

Only getting around 60 for practice, and around 130 for race, but most are coming away happy from what I've heard. I will admit that's only one side of the story, so if anyone has any other opinions, please let me knowith, and I'll pass it along.
50s on big track.

Sorry, I don't have any video, but I'll try to make that happen in the next few weeks.

$5 gate fee

Haven't been there yet this year, but raced there last year. (or was that 2014 ??? , can't remember:()

You mentioned "only one 65' gap".
If that is (?) the double jump directly before the finish line that's a doozy and they should do so something with that. I even made mention about it after the race that it needed to be made safer. The jump is doable but punishes you if you come up short, (casing it). And then you have the issue of racers not "going for it" while others are jumping over their head while their in the belly of it.

I recall eyeballing the jump before morning practice thinking to myself, why would they build that like that???? During the race's I was clearing it well enough by making sure I always over-jumped, but on one occasion I was in the wrong gear, severely cased it, and about lost my front teeth and got whiplash when my helmet hit my handlebar cross pad. My wife caught the whole mess on the video camera, and I on helmet cam. I barely held onto the bike from crashing. I was a mess, and just can't seem to forget how hard I hit and how scary it was.

Other than that, the track was great fun. I'm a huge fan of COCR and really would like to see that track/facility come alive again.

If I don't get stuck working this weekend I would like to bring the grandson and race Sunday.

Yeah it took me until my third "moto" to hit that. But, I haven't riden in 4 years either. I landed smooth and loved it every lap after that. What would you suggest doing to it?

They told me a 65 rider or two hit it the first lap after they built it. Do you think it's too close to the corner? Maybe too close to the finish line, making tired racers want to jump to gain another spot making it a safety issue?
I really am taking info back to the operators, so input will hopefully help.

Based on your post, kind of sounds like the jump hasn't changed since I've been there. And if it has, then my opinion and story are invalid.

My thoughts are that it is a well placed jump, that could give a racer a last minute edge before the finish against another racer, especially if one racer backs off or gets timid. That whole finish line section has always been a very narrow and technical section anyway.

The corner part is kind of funny, because when you're first trying to get the jump down, you over jump and then have to get on the binders really fast to keep from hitting the dirt wall, or going left instead of right. But once you get the feel, then the finish line corner is manageable.

I don't really have the experience or expertise to say what is the best fix for that, but I'm thinking if they just fill some dirt into the gap and round-over the landing more. You can still get the jump distance and carry air time, but safer.

Some of our other tracks have done a really good job with this. I love to jump and carry air time, but don't want punished for it if I'm off my pace a little.

Nancy actually caught a photo of one my races where two of us hit the jump, I went for it and the other didn't, but looking at the photo, it appears that I'm clearly over his head. If I can get a moment tonight I'll see if I can dig that one up.

I'm not surprised that the 65cc riders are clearing it, them kids are fearless.

But also understand that I have never been anything more than a "C" rider, and my intentions that day were to not jump anything. That, the back table top and the grandstand thingy (small table or step down triple) are the biggest jumps on the track. There's a sort of step up in the middle that took me two moto's to do alos.

After " thinking " I wouldn't jump anything, the four stroke gave me the confidence to hit them all. Which now has me hooked again......ugh.

Does it still look like this?

The photo's are out of order but you'll make sense of it.
This was in my 30+ race, but we were a mixed group of class's.

In the third photo down was our first lap. The kid (714) rolled the jump.
On the 2nd lap (bottom photo), he attempted and cased it. I don't believe he attempted again that day, and rolled it thereafter.

I know that if I were more of a beefcake-stud, and less a Pud, like most racers on here, I would be ashamed to ever wine about such a small double, but I hit the face of that S.O.B. and crossed the finish line, (luckily) with a bloody chin.

That sure looks a lot bigger than what I hit this past weekend, but I don't have any photos, so who knows. And I told my friends that I don't think there is any way I would have hit it on a two stroke, so props to you man! It was an easy seat bounce with a little blip on a four stroke.

Turnout for practice 15-40..
Race turnout under 80.
Track is fun but track prep isn't the greatest for the small turnouts.
Unless they have purchased new equipment since their last race they have the wrong equipment for a track that's had racing on it for 40 years. They use a roto till box which makes the dirt too fine which causes it to dry out way too quick. They need to just chisel plow and water. They are trying but it maybe too little too late for some racers. I enjoy the layout and the jumps but prep is definitely lacking. Besides dust the track is really safe in my opinion.

If 80 is the turn out, which I'm not arguing because I don't know, but wouldn't tiling the dirt up finer be better? Otherwise you would have one line through huge chunks from the chisel plow.
It sounds like you witnessed this, so like I said I'm not disagreeing, but I don't think they can keep their doors open with an 80 rider turn out. Possibly another place to ride that we will lose....? That's a real bummer if that's the case. Especially for me since it's about 10 minutes from my house.
We've lost Grumpy valley, Honda hills, wild wilderness, and a couple of other great tracks, all within 30 minutes of my house. That would really suck to lose another. But, if it's not good enough for local riders, then I guess I'll just have to travel more than an hour to find a place to ride.

67 entries last race. They don't promote anywhere other than Facebook and they don't post anything until a few days before the race. I mentioned this to them several times that they need to post on here.

Isn't there a nice private track near you ?

I guess that's why I'm here lol. I want to help.

I think Ron505 is right on the prep part, you can't just chisel plow and leave it. At the very least you'd have to drag a disc to cut it up. The PW's and mini's would struggle to get through it for sure.

There's been numerous post over the years on COCR's issues, particularly management, planning and promotion.

I have often stated and it bears repeating that COCR could be, (and should be), one of the top tracks in the state. Many track owners only dream of having the natural elevation changes, layout flexibility, and easy highway access that COCR has. As well as track history and absence of zoning pressures to shut it down.

That's why you chisel then disc. If it was primo dirt you could probably get away with a roto box but it's worn out.

I don't see it lasting too many more years.

Ive never been there but back in the 00's I had friends that loved the place.

Imagine this, I would go because it was too far away! Lol... there used to be 9 tracks or so within an hour of my house to race at. Now its 3. Hopefully they wont fall to the way side.

Now I think I have heard it all. We now have people complain about the SIZE of the dirt chunks after prep??? WTF? Every track that I have been to this year has tiled the dirt in one form or fashion from banner to banner, and without fail the riders play follow the leaded in the ONE main line created by the first bike out. After the third practice session every track looks like a cow path.
I am starting understand why track owners hate this site.

COCR has about 413 more important issues over the size of the dirt clods 10 feet off the main line.
