Chillitown Weekend Wrap up

Chilli Town MX

PR Addict
Rounds one and two are in the books for the Valero Championship Series at Chillitown MX and what a weekend it was! After several weeks of hard work getting the track and facility ready for an epic weekend of racing Mother Nature decided to unleash a fury of storms that left us wondering if we could even have a race. The storms rolled through and destroyed everything. Banners were torn down, bale covers lost, light plants toppled and broken, sign up tent ripped to shreds, computer systems and printers all ruined, entry forms soaked, tables and chairs tossed everywhere, trash littered across the pits, campers turned over and destroyed, and Port-A-Johns turned over. It was a mess to say the least!

Just when we had thought it was all a loss and we would surely have to cancel our great motocross family all came running to pitch in. Within a matter of a few hours everything started taking shape oncea gain. The Chillitown crew and several riders and their families worked late into the night to restore Chillitown to the point that we could still go on.

The morning of race day looked to be very promising with tons of riders and spectators pouring in to take advantage of our Free Open Practice running from 1-3:30pm. About 45 minutes before the start of practice we get a call from Life Ambulance Services explaining that Athens Hospital wasbeing evacuated due to no power and they would not be able to come until later in the day. We frantically started calling every EMS service we could find and no one was available.
Finally we get a phone call from Scioto Township EMS saying that they were on their way. It was then that we thought we were out of the woods. Just minutes before they were about to pull in they got called on an emergency run and we were left once again with waiting to get started. We thought for sure that we would never get things going.

Then finally about two hours after practice was supposed to start Scioto Township called and said they were on their way. Once again we were relieved that we could get things under way. Just as we were about to make the announcement that we would be getting things going we got the call that yet once again they were heading to another emergency call. It truly felt as though the motocross gods were working against us. It wasn’t until about 4pm that we actually got started.

Aside from all the setbacks it seemed as though everyone was being very understanding of the situation. We quickly threw our race day schedule out the window tried our best to give everyone what they wanted. The track was in great shape and the ruts and lines formed up great. The next obstacle was to figure out how to get through the night and plan everything so we finished up at a decent hour. Our plan was to finish some time around the time the fireworks display was to go off att he Chillicothe Paints around 10pm or so but our backs were against the wall with time so we kept moving.

The racing was the best we have seen at Chillitown. The pro classes were very exciting with some bar banging action between Skaggs and Baker. The amateur classes didn’t disappoint either. The 65cc 7-11 class was the lucky winners of the free class drawing in which 18 kids were treated to a free class for the night. The giving didn’t stop there either. Chris Scott Motors stepped up to the plate and offer to cover the entry fees for thef irst 10 riders that signed up in the Open A class.

The Dash for Cash once again turned out to be a fan favorite. Nathan Skaggs edged out Brad Baker for the win and brought home an extra$255.

All in all ourf irst night race was a huge success even though it ran a little longer than expected, but we were committed to giving the riders and spectators what they came for.

Sunday started off no different than the rest of the weekend. For whatever reason our make shift computer system was on the blink and held things up a little bit. We quickly got that under control and we were off and racing in no time. Bad Brad Baker was able to get a little redemption over Nathan Skaggs who won it all Saturday night with both overall wins in the 250A and Open A classes.

The track held up very nicely in the heat all day until towards the end of the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]motos when the jumps and straight-aways started to get a little dusty.
I have to say that for a weekend that liked to never have gotten started we felt pretty good about the way it finished up. The unofficial numbers for Saturday was 211 riders and 209 on Sunday.

We want to thank all of the riders and spectators that came out and endured the heat and delays. It is because of you guys that we can keep this going and to that we say Thank You!

This coming Saturday night July 7[SUP]th[/SUP] we will keep the ball rolling with round 3 of the Valero Championship Series. We are sure to have another epic night of racing so come on out and enjoy everything that Chillitown has to offer.
