Riding...

Sitting here thinking about riding...remembering the different things we do on a machine and the feeling of doing certain things on them. I love what it feels like on a bike to blaze through some down hill trails, weaving in and out. Or like when you hit a jump that just has a certain floating feeling that feels good....or one of my favorite jumps is at Malvern coming over the step-down back onto the turn after the start...ripping out of that corner and floating down the hill. So my question is "what is some sweet feelings on the bike and how would you describe it?"

This one time at band camp...

In all seriousness, I miss the big jump at 330! Talk about floating down the hill, WoW!

That jump at Malvern is one my favorites too. Always made me feel confident in my riding.

I always like the start, wide open........that is great. Always liked the big double next to the start straight at DMC........kind of throws you up there......75 foot.

Nailing a big sandy berm and laying it over almost enough to bar drag.

The "floatyness" feeling of a freestyle ramp.

Hitting loraccos leap as fast as you can go to float into that "floatyness" feeling. lol

The feel of a big rythem section, like the old line of taple tops at steel city or the doubles at scenic.

In 04 when I cranked the Elevator at gatorback on my 250F 4th all she had, might of been in 5th....it was just awesome. You just float up and up and up and up and up.........and you land so smoothly at the top. That's the only jump i've ever hit where I had no solid gut feeling either way whether or not I was going to make it. I'd imagine that's the same feeling you get doing the leap....

I love the days where everything goes right and you just feel fast everywhere. Then somebody passes me and I'm like, wow they're having a really perfect day.....

There are those days where you can't make a mistake, the bike stick like glue everywhere. You feel confident in corners/ruts, you're landing the sweet spot of every jump......you're not riddled with armpump.

I also like the feelling when you are pulling way from the guy behind you inch by inch and you're making eye contact basically in the same spots on the track to guage each other.

And I love the feeling when you're stalking the rider in front of you just waiting to make your move and you're in total control.

I hate it when someone is breathing down your neck on the last lap. But I like that feeling of pressure in a wierd way if they don't get around me, but if they do it's like "aahhh...man.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr."

The jumps at Grumpy Valley.
I take it you were nailing that long jump directly in the center of the track? Saw a kid hit that on an 80. Nothing but air.

Deep into winter, cozied up under a blanket, with eyes closed, dreaming of summer, here's what I see:

Late afternoon sun casting that warm golden glow on my front fender and knobby as I'm blazing south, up the back stretch of Honda Hills and lightly stirring up some of that wonderful dust created only on a motocross track.

The raw adrenalline rush of twisting that throttle and releasing the ponies, hearing the scream and feeling the torque while just hanging on, racing from corner to corner.

Sweat running down my face as I'm pouring out my intensity, pushing myself to catch up and show a front wheel to my opponant just up ahead of me, after 5 hard laps and getting a thumbs up and that look of respect that is shared only between racers when it's over, regardless of the final result.

After a days riding or racing, the feeling of driving into Heath, down my home path, in my old Ford truck (flossy), bikes in the back. Windows down, it's a very comfortable 80 degrees, I'm still in my gear because I'm most happy when wearing my riding boots, with traces of dirt still in my face and hair, and body worn out and aching. There ain't nobody in this town that has it better than I do, "Right Here- Right Now". Thinking it don't get any better than this!

Alessi and izzi. Not sure anyone else was light enough or had the support to make the bike get over it. I thought they were 105s. Lichtle tried it and just cases the hell out of it twice. But he was always tall.

NQ: Moto porn for sure. I imagine that with the buzz of a 2 stroke.

Good words man. That's more like it...imagination. Using his thinker and passion. We are all thinking about riding...so what are you thinking about? It's a round table...I need moto therapy. The winter is to rest and prepare of sorts, at least for me it is.

C'mon Knox...let's here something real...without the chip. I have a chip too, gotta watch it.

For me it was and will always be about the connection with the machine. From way back when, up until this day, you can walk through the pits and hear guys talking about what gear they were in when they jumped the triple, busted through the whoops or nailed that corner perfect. I NEVER knew what gear I was in, I could tell you what the bike sounded like, but had no clue as to the gear. If anyone asked what gear I was in I always said. "braaap, braaaap, braaap... I guess third?"
That feeling begins at the starting line. That is the feeling that I miss... Picking your spot on the line, starting the bike when you see the white flag for the race ahead of you. Shaking all the possible dirt out of your goggles before sliding them on. Cracking each knuckle and snapping my neck before each moto. Close my eyes and taking those three deep breaths, saying your little prayer for safety and trying to relax. Reving the bike and understanding the sound. pulling the clutch and front brake just to get the feeling. Open your eyes and focus 100% on that little pin holding the gate. Nothing, and I mean nothing else matters at that point. It was always a personal battle with the gate. I did not care about the other riders. It was just me and that gate. How close to getting caught can I get? Drop to two fingers holding the clutch and begin to feel the bike pull, the internal count in your head, 3 - 2 - 1 ... You see that tiny little movement of that pin and then... Blur.... Your brain takes over, next thing you know your halfway down the start, busting through gears sliding your weight back to grab that extra bit of grip. Faster, faster...
Yeah the start is where its at. And that feeling is 100 times better when the gate is full and your banging bars at the first corner.
Yes, I jumped the leap at Red Bud a bunch (on a Husaberg no less) the uphill triple at Mt. Morris and the big tabletop at Millville. But from a physical standpoint none of those "felt" as good as the perfect timing of the 1 mile long stretch of whoops at Croom. I rode that section for an entire day trying to get it right. Serious arm pump, large amount of butt pucker from hitting a tree (twice), and then.... perfection. Damn that was a great day.

Their ya go Knox...knew ya had it in you...now if others wouldn't be so shy as to drum up some convo!

I have a fond memory from many years ago at Smith Road. I finally conquered a small double up by the railroad tracks by following my son over them. Man after that we would jump it side by side with no fear. What a great feeling. I also remember the day he passed me for the first time, at Beechwood over the big table in the front. I was on my bud's new 450, my son on my old 250. I aired it out so I thought. He goes flying by me and never looked back. Those are some memories that really get me wanting to go riding. Beechwood also had a step up I never did conquer but my bud DJ used to jump up it while looking back at me, man I wanted it.

Sitting here thinking about riding...So my question is "what is some sweet feelings on the bike and how would you describe it?"

Any larger floater jump. I've had a few I've liked through the years as I progressed... There was a decent size table down at the Vinton County Fair track I liked as a C rider. The double in from of the stands at COCR was always pretty cool back in the day. There were many others, just those came to mind in the immediate memory... I like seat hop step up and overs too...

As for today, well, I know I need to get out more and I will...someday, but hitting the BC Finish line jump smooth is something I enjoy. The table, table leading up to hit is kinda sweet after coming into the first one on the gas...brapp, brapp...braaaaapppp through the section. I'm also trying to get into railing a long corner rut...every once in a many times in between I can get the speed, lean, etc. right and it's like I'm on auto pilot. Unforntunately the latter doesn't happen all that much, but 'tis exciting when I do it. Typically is followed by a dump or cross rut the next lap and I go back to going around the ruts on the way outside... ;)

The sound and smell of a two-stroke makes me happy.

x10 High Octane and Castor 927 can't be beat! I do miss the herd of bees at the start of the nationals. Was a sound of beauty. Now starts sound like a symphony of farts....
