The return... With a twist.

So, I assume this is my midlife crisis... I made a promise to myself that when I hit 50 pounds lost, I would get a bike. Well, 51 down and look what followed me home tonight.
So here is the plan. I am going to take this bright and shinny 2004 KX125 and put a few of my posts into action.
Everyone says "This sport costs too much" Well I am going to prove that you do not need to spend 10K on a new fart bike to be competitive in moto. Total budget will be WELL under $2,000. I found this on Craigslist in Nowhere, Tennessee. The owner purchased it new and has only rode it a few times a year and if has not been touched in years. Now, if you are a vintage guy or every rebuild any motocross bike you know you hear this on about 90% of the bikes you find. BUT, this time, I think it is true. Got it home and of course the first step was to remove the energy stickers that guys put all over the darn place. (I still have the backing stuck to the plastic in most places so if anyone knows a good way to remove it, please let me know.) I digress.
Only stickers on this bike will be from actual sponsors.
Think I am going to do this is two steps. One, rebuild to basic running condition and then prove it can race. Then step two will be a total rebuild and make the coolest, off the shelf, factory bike I can put together and then put it in the top 5 at Loretta's.
Time line and details of step 1:
Rebuild shock and forks for my weight. New top end, New tires, Change fluids, New cables, levers, chain and new bearings all around. AND THATS IT. Max this step at $500. If it does not fit in the budget then its not going to happen this step. Oh wait, add numbers to that list 'cause I am racing this thing at Chilitown in 3 weeks.
Step 2 will start when the snow falls. Details for that are still being made.

So, if you want to get the name of your business on this project, send me a message and we will get this ball rolling.

Much more to come

If you podium lorettas and Kawasaki comes up and puts a hat on your head:

What are you gonna do ? Step on it ? Pee on it ? Spray paint the logo so you can't see it anymore..... Gawk and say "you guys rememeber making these things ? This ain't a Kawasaki"

How many years of free membership will you need to put an AMA sticker on it?

Are you 144ing that SOB or going strict 125? What class are you racing ?

Once your boy grows into it he will have a sick bike.

Go get em! Rock on.

Oh i put brake cleaner on a rag and wipe.off.sticky stuff. Actually use a plastic spatula to scrape glue off.

Decal works glue comes off with the grafix. Thats why i get it

Welcome back! This will get the remains of the decals off. Better yet squeeze a black plastic kit in that budget!

Good for you, man. I encourage everyone to do this kind of thing if you are looking to get back into racing.

ive always wanted to do a sick kx125 build, never even rode one they just look sweet when done right! good luck and keep us posted on progress!

oh and on the sticky stuff depending on how bad it is, i soak it with goo gone and let it sit for a bit (sometimes over night if really bad) and a fresh rag with new goo gone usually wil take it off in the morning.. sometimes still leaves a little crap behind, and then i just use brake cleaner. not the best for the plastic but a spray of SC1 after and its shined right back up!

If Kawasaki gives me some money or parts, then they can put a hat on my head. Until then I would toss it away and ask for my PitRacer hat.
AMA sticker will be on my Hansen knit hat.
It is staying as a 125. Building it for me and my older son that is in the Army. IF he ever rides then he can run the 125 class and I am running 30 and 40+ so I can upset even more dudes that say old A / Pro riders should not be allowed to race. :)

I am super pumped on this project. Not only does it give me something fun to work on, it will also allow me to finally get to ride with my boys.
I have some really cool ideas whipping around my head... Should I Titanium Nitride the forks or DLC? DLC piston pin, Nitride rotors, Air Forks? Black rims and gold hubs? Black grey or green frame? Oh the options

Sounds like your budget just went out the window.

If there was only a quality piston manufacturer in this state that could hook me up with a top end kit... Plenty of advertising space available on those pretty green shrouds.

Hey if you got sticker space, I know a guy that's real nice outta mentor Ohio.

That's kinda dumb for you tho. New bikes always better. Look at the yz250 you bought that had nothing but wierd s**t on it. Bolts etc. if you can get new bikes just keep doing that.

If you podium in any class other than the shaft drive class at lorettas on that thing, I will buy you a new rear tire, or a case of beer. You can hold me to that as long as we live. Consider it motivation. The two classes you listed are no joke these days. Hell, I'll even say if you podium on ANY bike in those two classes, I'll offer the same..

Make it a chrome rc replica from the 90s
