Some of the lakes in Michigan are beautiful for sure. But damn, they never even seem to warm up even in the summer.

Norris and Cumberland are both great and large lakes, very clear but the lakes in Michigan are the clearest I've ever seen. Summersville in WVA is also clear but not like Torch Lake in Michigan. John the water is a bit on the cool side but go up in late August and it doesn't hurt if you have some whale blubber, like me.

Take a pass on Cumberland, house boats are legally allowed to dump black water in the lake.
Ya that is true and a bit gross. Last time I was there I got the worst ear infection of my life and it was from the water the doctor said.

In other news I guess one man, or one track. With persistence and use of the actual LAW can make a difference. “Look at it, would you just look at it”. Congrats to East Fork for making a valid argument and being one man/small team for getting a poor policy changed. Hopefully none of the the “your stupid” “chill out” “not gonna make difference” crowd rides tomorrow.

My parents had a boat at Cumberland for probably 25 years. I never spent as much time at the lake as them or my sister, I was racing on the weekends.

Norris was our go to, usually 1-2, 7 day stays a year. Sold the boat though, something I will replace after the youngest heads to college.

Friend of mine, Dalan Courtney owns Shanghi Marina at Norris. Been to Norris numerous times. My parents moved their boat to Norris when Cumberland dropped the lake to fix the dam. They ended up back at Cumberland. Nice, but I personally like Cumberland. Creature of habit I suppose.

Thread topic hopping - but kinda following the crowd.

We spent so much time boating while our kids were growing up. Our goal was to boat on as many lakes in KY and surrounding states as possible before the kids finished high school.

I fish a little but mostly the family swims, skis, wakeboards, cruises, and tubes.

In order of my preference and a list that some of you might want to try..
  • Laurel Lake (KY) clear calm water, no development, primitive boat in only camping
  • Norris Lake (TN) superb water, easy to avoid crowds, lots of fabulous rental houses for big families and good ski water
  • Dale Hollow (KY) just wow, clear, easy to find good water
  • Fontana Lake (NC) up in the NC mountains, cool water falls.
  • Rough River Lake (KY) narrow and not as clear, have weekdays to yourself, bass, crappie, fun state park lodge
  • Cumberland (KY) big, good ski coves, poker run boats/girls, main channel has more chop and big boats, easy to catch hybrid stripers
  • Ohio River Cincinnati, Hooters by boat, restaurants, ski forever without turning around, fireworks, concerts
  • Cave Run (KY) not as clear, tougher to find smooth water.
  • East Fork (OH) smaller, dedicated swim zones, so my cleaner than the Ohio for the kids to swim, decent skiing early morning
  • Nolin Lake (KY) twin for Rough River
  • Lake Erie (OH) Walleye and Perch charters, rough for my small boat
  • Kentucky and Barkley (KY) like a river, not as clear, big lakes, damns are cool to see, 2500 acres of Land Between the Lakes
  • Barren River (KY) Similar to Nolin and Rough River
  • Ceasar Creak (OH) popular on weekends on weekends, probably good for PWCs
  • Brookville Lake (IN) - bath tub rough, don't bother
