Thievery in SC

I asked my agent the same thing Hershey asked. He has assured me, my bikes are covered. I pay for specific "motorcycle" policies for all 4 motorcycles that I own.

That's what's shown. That's why I copied it -..... Off-Road Vehicle
Right from the Allstate site.

I misunderstood your point I guess. Since it was highlighted in red I thought you were pointing out the bike wasn't covered. Having read it again it looks more like you were pointing out that a separate policy would cover it.

My apologies for the error.

I will call a Progressive Claims supervisor and have everything clarified. I will let you know what I find out.

I think Anita already did that...for Georgie

Those chat sessions are customer service. I spoke to a claims supervisor. If you are at a race track and a bike is stolen, there would be an investigation with promoter, etc. If you the bike you have there is intended to be raced and once you sign up to race, then ALL coverage is excluded including theft. However, if you are camping at a track, but bike isn't intended to be raced that day or weekend and you are not signed up to race it, then there would be coverage. Technically, the CSR's response is right, however, is there intent to race the bike and once you are signed up to race, again, ALL coverage is excluded including theft from the race track whether the bike is sitting out or locked up in your trailer, van, etc. He stated more than once if claim occurs at a track that there WILL be an investigation.

Oh they'll investigate. Hell they call tracks 2 hours from your house when you show them a police report and pictures of a broken window from your own garage. And ask the promoter if you crashed the bike beyond reasonable repair.

The progressive guy showed me this picture. It was taken 1 week after my 250 was stolen. And he pointedly and dickishly stated: "how could you be racing your bike the next weekend if it was stolen the week before?"

I responded with that's a different bike that looks identical. And you can come see that bike if you want.... but I dealt with that s**t for probably a good 20-30 days. In the end they paid. They'll pay. You just gotta have as much information as possible to back yourself up. Just know your policy and don't try to fraud the insurance company and everything will go your way.

That makes sense to me.
Everything is hunky-dory until the "racing" thing enters the equation.

In your case, they should have paid. However, it's going to be a different story if it happens at a race track.

Another gray area....you have a practice bike and a race bike (you only race the race bike). Race bike is stolen from your home. Coverage is excluded because it is not an acceptable use and they will then most likely cancel the policy or remove the bike. Off road/pleasure use is an acceptable use - racing is not. They will allow the occasional racing as long as primary use is offroad/pleasure use, but still no coverage at the track.

With allstate it must not be gray......the policy specialist specifically said it is covered no matter where including an organized racing event. I'd change insurers if that's the bad rap at progressive.

Very true. This was brought up in one of my long chats with the adjustor. I told him I raced that bike a couple times but I practice more than I race. And anyway the bike was lifted outta my garage. Not at a track.

Honesty goes a long way as well with these adjustors as they gave the ability of making the gray fall into your favor....(or for dick/liars...out of your favor)

Plain and simple this dad did not have his bikes properly insured. I hate GoFundme's with a passion, especially for toys. Obviously this family has money to burn or they are just making a very poor decision to bet on a kid that's far from a top rider in Ohio.

Ask for them to send you a copy of your policy form....not just the declarations page. I'd be happy to review it for you. If you want a definite answer, call and ask to speak to a claims supervisor as their decisions will override what a customer service rep tells you as they have the final say.

I have been doing this for 22 years now and there is a racing exclusion in every single auto related policy form out there. However, there are specialty companies out there that have a niche in motorsports that will provide coverage for racing. It's not cheap.

The insurance company lawyers can interpret the policy anyway they like. I had a street bike that was stolen a few years ago. It was for sale and a guy came to buy it (he drove up in a nice Bronco) and asked for a test ride. Thinking a had a new Bronco as collateral I let him. He never came back and the Bronco was stolen. I turned it the claim to Farmers and they denied the claim saying that there is a clause in the policy that excludes coverage if the bike is given to somebody (like a dealership) to sell and it is stolen from their property. I was like WTF that is not what happend I was selling it myself and nobody else was involved. Their answer was " I'm sorry that is the way our attorneys interpret the policy".

To make a long story short I had to hire an attorney, get a letter from the state insurance commissioner stating that he also interprets the policy the same way that I did, and jump through a bunch more hoops, argue back and forth for 9 months and then I finally got paid minus 1/3 for attorney fees.

Did your agent step in and try to help you?

No he said his hands were tied it was a legal issue on how to interpret that clause and on any legal issues they will side with their attorneys
